Gothenburg 2008 Print E-mail
On Wednesday 25th June 2008, Ballymena & Antrim athletes; Claire Wilkinson, Lauren Bell, Hannah Todd, Gary Coulter and Dean Adams, along with team leader Ian Neely set out on a rare trip to one of Sweden’s largest cities to compete in the Gothenburg World Youth Games. These games feature over three thousand competitors from over twenty countries all over the world. Such internationals as Stephan Holm have featured in these games which illustrates their significance.

We arrived in Sweden and soon discovered that it would be a very different experience to what we were used to, both socially and in competition. The Ullevi stadium which plays host to the games was a three minutes walk away from our hotel and we were all anxious to see inside it and check out the track. Exploring the city and looking for food was memorable and we soon found the places we liked and regularly visited. Walking through the city was weird as we would always have to keep an eye out for trams roaming and cars on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. Claire was nearly hit a few times. We tried different foods and as Ian enjoyed the odd coffee, we explored different cafés around the city and also visited the Hard Rock Café.

On the Thursday we ventured to the stadium to get a feel of the track and do a decent warm-up. It was a daunting feeling when we walked in and was a scary prospect of actually competing in the stadium.
