On Saturday, a number of B&A Juniors took to the country in the Northern Ireland Agegroup XC Champs, while the seniors slogged around to just miss out on the McConnel Shield.
First up was Kathy Kirk, competing in the U12 Girls and completing the course in 35th position. Jon Browning was next to tackle the soft conditions, finishing 55th in the U12 Boys race. Maeve Keenan & Catherine McCloughlin had more ground to cover in the U14 Girls, but both made it round the ever more muddy course, Maeve in 36th and Catherine in 91st. Lynn Murphy had 2 laps to complete in the U18 Girls, but she showed good strength to come through to 23rd. The Senior Men had 5 laps in by now very muddy conditions. The team was led by Jarleth Falls, who twice lost his spikes in the tretcherous conditions, but still manged to recover to an excellent 3rd place overall. Just 4 places further back, Nigel Carlisle showed great strength and endurance for an 800m runner, finishing 3 places ahead of Ian Barrett, who inturn was 5 ahead of Gareth Hill. Matt Wray was 5th man home in 32nd with Steve McGuinness completing the turn-out in 47th. The first 4 men home counted for the team, and in a closely fought race, B&A missed out on claiming the McConnel Shield (and the right to never run the race again!) by a single point. Results |
