Antrim Games 2005 Print E-mail
The Antrim Games on Saturday, hosted by Ballymena & Antrim Athletic CLub with support from Antrim Borough Council, celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the club, and the 25th Anniversary of the Antrim Stadium.

The event was preceeded by a parade of past and present internationals who have pulled on the Green, Black and White vest. The two dozen athletes a testament to the contribution the club has made to the sport in the last half century.

Athletes from all over Ireland competed for honours, but it was local talent that provided some of the main highlights. Anna Boyle produced a sprint double, winning both the 100m & 200m from Amy Foster of North Down and Claire Bergin of Dundrum South Dublin. In the field, Caolán Flanagan won a the High Jump with a personal best leap of 2m05 - the highest by a Northern Ireland athlete this season, and all the more impressive considering the testing conditions.

The strong wind and occasional showers meant none of the track performances troubled the record books, but the racing was no less competitive. Just 13 hundreths of a second separated David McCarthy of West Waterford and Dominic McAlister from St Malachys at the end of their 1500m race. Liam McDermid and Ian Neely took the final barrier together in their 400m hurdles, McDermid from Victoria Park just holding off the host club athlete over the last 40m.

Paul Hession of Atherny AC took the men's sprint double ahead of Darragh Graham from Sli Chulainn. Michael Morgan was a clear winner of the 400m, while Darragh O'Farrell of Belgrave dominated the Long Jump, with BAAC's Leslie Leung 2nd. Jennifer O'Sullivan braved the showers to clinch the Javelin by less than 2m over Laura Kerr.

Two competetive 800m races closed events on the track. Lisburn AC's Kelly Reid was too string for her training partner Christine Long in the women's race, while the Ciaran O'Connell from Glaslough Harriers gate crashed the Sean Kyle training group with 2nd to 7th all coached by the Ballymena & Antrim general.

This event not aonly marked significant anniversaries for the club and the stadium. Ballymena & Antrim's two biggest names, Sean & Maeve Kyle are celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary this year. Fittingly, the meeting was closed with presentations to both of them, congratulating them for everthing they have achieved both personally and in the sport over the last 50 years.
